Mechanical Circulatory Support

Experimental cardiovascular simulation, quantitative device characterization, and computational modeling of heart–LVAD interactions.

SDSU Mock Circulatory Loop

The SDSU cardiovascular simulator reproduces heart-failure physiology and circulatory loading conditions while integrating ventricular assist devices. Programmable ventricular contraction, bioprosthetic valves, and adjustable vascular resistance and compliance allow controlled studies of the native heart and mechanical support.

Dynamic pressure–flow characterization

Dynamic H–Q loops quantify the interaction of native cardiac contraction and LVAD support. Experimental studies extended the external-work balance to partial bypass, accounting for forward aortic flow and aortic compliance.

Artificial-pulse synchronization

A simple mathematical model informed by mock-loop measurements explored the timing of the HeartMate 3 artificial pulse relative to native contraction. Optimized timing approximately doubled flow pulsatility without materially changing mean flow.

Cardiovascular Digital Twin Development

The NSF–FDA project is developing a lumped-parameter computational counterpart of the SDSU cardiovascular simulator. Measurements from the physical system inform model development and validation, while computational predictions are evaluated against experimental behavior.
